The sporting calendar for 2026 is poised to deliver a significant boost to the local economy in Carlow, as Carlow County Council officially announces its stage sponsorship of Rás Tailteann 2026. This partnership is not merely a celebration of elite cycling; it is a strategic economic maneuverer designed to position Carlow as a primary beneficiary of one of Ireland’s most prestigious sporting events. By hosting two race starts, the county is set to capitalize on a substantial influx of visitors, participants, and support teams.
Speaking at the official announcement, Cllr. Ken Murnane, Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council, underscored the strategic advantage Carlow holds in this year’s route planning. He emphasized that the county is uniquely positioned to become the single biggest recipient of race-related spending throughout the duration of the event. This is not a matter of chance, but a direct result of Carlow’s geographical location and local infrastructure, which have made it the ideal operational hub for the race organizers.
The data supporting this projection is both compelling and robust, reflecting a sophisticated understanding of the event’s economic footprint. By securing the responsibility of hosting two full race starts, Carlow has effectively locked in a significant and concentrated influx of capital. Based on rigorous analysis of accommodation, team requirements, and logistical support, the council has calculated an estimated direct economic impact of approximately €250,000 to the local economy.
This figure represents a substantial vote of confidence in Carlow’s capacity to host large-scale, high-profile national events. By concentrating this volume of visitors—and their associated spending power over the course of two stages, Carlow is poised to reap a financial dividend that will be felt throughout the county’s hospitality, retail, and service sectors.
Speaking on behalf of Rás Tailteann 2026, Race Director Ger Campbell expressed his strong enthusiasm for the partnership with Carlow, highlighting the rare logistical advantages the county offers the event.
“We are delighted to be in Carlow,” Campbell remarked. “From an organizational perspective, what the Council has provided here is exemplary. Hosting two starts in a single county is no small logistical feat, and the support we’ve received from the local team has been nothing short of exceptional. When you look at the route, the roads, and the terrain, Carlow provides the perfect environment for the kind of top-tier, competitive cycling that the Rás is famous for. We know the riders will be pushed to their limits on these stages, and we are confident that the warm reception from the local community will be the fuel that drives the peloton forward. It is a partnership that makes sense on every level, and we are incredibly grateful to the Council for their foresight in recognizing the value of this event.”
Speaking about the Carlow Welcome that awaits the teams , Cllr. Paul Doogue , Mayor of Carlow Municipal District said “"In Carlow, we pride ourselves on more than just our ability to host a world-class event; we pride ourselves on the warmth of the welcome we extend to every visitor who crosses our county line. When you come to Carlow for a festival or sporting occasion, you aren't just a spectator or a participant you become part of our community for the duration of your stay. Whether you are here for the Rás Tailteann or any of our vibrant local festivals, you can expect the very best of Carlow hospitality, a lively atmosphere, and a town that is genuinely thrilled to have you here. We invite everyone to come, experience our unique spirit, and see exactly why Carlow is the place to be in 2026."
This sponsorship is a key component of the wider Council Festival & Event Fund, a platform designed to stimulate the local economy by supporting high-profile events. Linda Culleton, Economic Development Officer for Carlow County Council, highlighted the strategic nature of this investment by saying “
The launch event was further elevated by the presence of two true legends of Irish cycling, whose histories are inextricably linked to the fabric of this iconic race. We were privileged to be joined by Mike O’Donaghue, the champion of the 1973 Rás Tailteann, and Eddie Dawson, former Assistant Rás Director.
During his storied career, O’Donaghue cemented his place in cycling folklore not only by winning the 1973 edition but also by securing a runner-up finish in 1972 and claiming an incredible nine stage victories. Beside him stood Eddie Dawson, a man whose dedication to the Rás has spanned an extraordinary five decades. Having first competed in 1969, Dawson went on to become a cornerstone of the event’s administration, including serving as O’Donaghue’s Team Manager during that triumphant 1973 season. It was a genuine honor to catch up with these "Men of the Rás," whose endurance and spirit perfectly embody the legacy of this great race.
As excitement builds across the county, we look forward to the race descending upon us later this month. Rás Tailteann 2026 will take place from May 20th to May 24th, 2026.
