€1,000,000 Investment Delivers Safer Routes to School for Hundreds of Families

Bagenalstown is fast becoming a leading example of how Active Travel investment can transform a town, with the official launch today of two major Safe Routes to School projects at Queen of the Universe National School and St. Brigid's National School.

Minister Jennifer Murnane O'Connor joined the Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council, Cllr. Thomas Kinsella, elected members, Catherine Callaghan TD, Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere TD and dedicated staff from Carlow County Council including Director of Services Padráig O Gorman, local green schools and community representatives to mark the completion of the projects, which were delivered by Carlow County Council in partnership with the National Transport Authority (NTA) and An Taisce.

Backed by a combined investment of approximately €1,000,000, the schemes have introduced safer crossings, traffic-calming measures, widened footpaths, enhanced School Zones, landscaping and improved walking and cycling infrastructure, making daily journeys safer and more attractive for hundreds of children and families.

A Model for Active Travel Investment

With Safe Routes to School projects now completed at both of Bagenalstown's primary schools and plans advancing for further investment at Presentation De La Salle College, the town is emerging as a showcase for the benefits of sustained Active Travel funding. Rather than isolated projects, the investments are creating a connected network of safer routes that encourage walking, cycling, scooting and wheeling, while reducing traffic congestion and improving the public realm for the whole community.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Jennifer Murnane O'Connor said: "These projects are making a real difference for children, families and communities. Bagenalstown demonstrates how investment in active travel infrastructure can create safer, healthier and more sustainable places to live, learn and travel."

Cathaoirleach Cllr. Thomas Kinsella welcomed the completion of the schemes, describing them as a significant investment in the future of the town and its school communities.

Padráig O Gorman, Director of Services added: "Bagenalstown is becoming a model for Active Travel investment. Through strong collaboration and sustained funding, we are creating safer streets, healthier travel choices and lasting benefits for the wider community."

The projects form part of the national Safe Routes to School Programme, funded through the Department of Transport and the NTA Active Travel Programme, which continues to support safer and more sustainable travel choices for school communities across Ireland.
