Lisgarvan House International Horse Trials Returns – A World-Class Equestrian and Country Life Experience in the Heart of County Carlow
The lush rolling countryside of County Carlow is set to come alive once again with the Lisgarvan House International Horse Trials, taking place from 21st to 24th August 2025. Just two miles from Ballon and easily accessible via the M9 motorway, this internationally renowned event has rapidly become a fixture on Ireland’s equestrian and country lifestyle calendar.
Now entering its third year, Lisgarvan House is not just a sporting event – it is a celebration of community, country life, and Irish hospitality. Organised and hosted by the Corrigan family, who manage the event alongside their busy farming operations, the Horse Trials have become a true testament to rural Ireland’s capacity for world-class event delivery.
“The commitment of the Corrigan family in putting Carlow on the international equestrian map is nothing short of inspirational,” said Cllr Ken Murnane, Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council. “It shows how rural innovation and tradition can work hand-in-hand to create something truly special. This event brings together sport, tourism, farming, and community in a way that benefits the whole county.”
The 2024 edition saw participation from riders across 14 nations, including Olympic and top Irish competitors, and this year’s event is set to be even bigger. Thousands of spectators from across Ireland and beyond are expected to descend on Lisgarvan, drawn not only by the sporting excellence but by the atmosphere of welcome, celebration, and authenticity.
The event begins with dressage on Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd August – an elegant and disciplined test of horse and rider – before the action heats up with cross country and show jumping on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August, the main spectator days.
These demanding and thrilling challenges showcase the athleticism, trust, and stamina of the competitors in a way that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.
Clive Corrigan, Event Director, is clear about the event’s growing success:
“Lisgarvan is more than a competition – it’s a celebration of the land, the animals, and the people who make Ireland what it is. We’re proud to welcome international riders, local families, and everyone in between. We’ve built this event with care and passion, and we’re so grateful for the support from the community.” Something for Everyone: A Country Fair with Heart
Beyond the fences and dressage arenas, Lisgarvan offers a real Country experience. Following the success of the Trade Village introduced in 2024, this year’s fair will be even bigger, with a wide array of food stalls, crafts, agricultural equipment, and equestrian gear. It’s the perfect family day out in the heart of Carlow’s farmland. For the foodies, a hand-picked selection of Breakfast Baps, Sourdough Toasties, Burgers and Bakes, Ice Creams, and Specialty Coffees will be available, ensuring no one goes hungry. Local legend O’Hara’s of Carlow Brewing will once again provide refreshments in the bar area, celebrating Carlow’s strong food and drink heritage.
Sunday 24th August will see the first Gain Pet Nutrition Dog Show, offering fun, competition, and prizes for all four-legged participants – and plenty of treats for owners too.
“This is the kind of event that makes rural Ireland shine,” noted Cllr John Pender, Cathaoirleach of Tullow Municipal District . “It’s more than just an equestrian fixture – it’s a gathering of community, craft, and countryside. It brings huge tourism and economic benefits to Carlow while offering something that feels warm, real, and rooted in our landscape.”
