Where better to gather stories than the library – a place already alive with whispers from the past? This Samhain, Carlow Libraries transform into magical spaces full of eerie wonder, thrilling tales, and spine-tingling fun for the whole family. From October 28th to 31st, libraries across the county will become vibrant hubs of spooky creativity and storytelling as part of Samhain Festival 2025.
Whether you’re a little monster eager to get your hands dirty or a grown-up ghost drawn to ancient mysteries, there’s something to send a chill down everyone’s spine.
Children can spend a full day immersed in frightful fun at the Halloween Art Camp with Jean Robertson or stir up spooky delights like chocolate apple mummies at the Kids Cooking Classes with food educator and author Deirdre Doyle of The Cool Food School. Curious minds will be captivated by creepy crawlies in Dave’s Halloween Jungle, while budding sculptors can bring their imaginations to life in the Clay Monster Workshop with artist Liga Valge.
And for those who enjoy stories with a darker twist, Spooky Musical Tales with Ali will blend songs and ghostly narratives into a hauntingly delightful experience – costumes encouraged!
For those who prefer their Samhain with a side of science, join archaeologist Caoimhe Ní Thóibín for “From Murder to Miscarriage”, an insightful talk that reveals the chilling truths buried in ancient bones, exploring everything from mysterious traumas to forgotten lives.
“This year’s Samhain programme is a celebration of curiosity, culture and creativity,” said Cllr. Daniel Pender, Leas Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council. “At Carlow County Council, we are deeply committed to supporting events that not only entertain but also educate and connect our communities. Libraries play an essential role in that mission. They are far more than book-lending spaces — they are vibrant, inclusive hubs of learning, inspiration and civic engagement.
“Through Council support, we’re proud to offer high-quality, free programming across our library network, ensuring that families from all backgrounds can access meaningful cultural experiences. During Samhain, our libraries come alive as places where the imagination is given free rein — from storytelling and science to food, art and folklore. I would strongly encourage families, children and adults alike to explore these unique events and embrace the magic that happens when people come together through creativity and shared stories.”
John Shortall, County Librarian with Carlow County Council, added:
“We’re delighted to welcome everyone back into our libraries this Samhain, and grateful for the strong support from Carlow County Council in enabling us to deliver such a rich and engaging programme. Libraries
have always been spaces where people gather to learn, imagine and explore — and during Samhain, that mission takes on an especially magical quality.
“Our aim is to make the library a place where everyone feels welcome — where a child can meet their first monster made of clay, where a teenager discovers archaeology through ancient bones, and where adults reconnect with stories and traditions that speak to our shared heritage. Thanks to the Council’s commitment to inclusive cultural programming, all of these events are free and open to the public. Whether it’s your first time visiting or your hundredth, we invite you to come experience the wonder, warmth and creativity that define Carlow’s library spaces this October.”
With free events taking place across Carlow, Borris, Tullow, and Bagenalstown Libraries, now is the time to book your place and experience the strange, the spooky, and the wonderfully creative side of Samhain.
