Carlow may be inland, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make waves in protecting our oceans!
Once again, this September, Carlow County Council is proud to support the Big Beach Clean, a nationwide initiative led by Clean Coasts and part of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC). While coastal communities will be tackling litter on beaches, here in County Carlow we’re taking action along our riverbanks, because litter dropped in towns and cities is one of the leading causes of marine pollution.
From 19th to 21st September, volunteers across Carlow are invited to come together to clean up litter along our waterways, helping to stop it from reaching the sea. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference locally while contributing to a global citizen science project.
In 2024, over 15,000 volunteers across Ireland removed 95 tonnes of litter from our coasts, which included several communities from County Carlow. Let’s make 2025 even bigger, and show that inland communities are just as vital in protecting our marine environment.
