Bathing Water Prohibition Notice – River Barrow at Bagenalstown, County Carlow Issued by Carlow County Council

As a precautionary measure to safeguard public health, Carlow County Council is issuing a Bathing Water Prohibition Notice for designated bathing areas along the River Barrow at Bagenalstown effective today, 16 July 2025.

Routine bathing water monitoring was conducted along the River Barrow at Bagenalstown in accordance with regulatory requirements. Microbiological analysis of the sample taken revealed elevated levels of Escherichia Coli exceeding the thresholds set out in the Bathing Water Quality Regulations.

Due to the potential risk to bathers' health, swimming and bathing are prohibited at the following affected location(s) on the River Barrow until further notice;

  • Bathing Area - Bagenalstown Boat Slip;
  • Bathing Area - Area 16 Family Amenity area opposite the picnic benches.

Signage will be erected at the relevant bathing areas to inform the public.

Further water sampling will be carried and once results confirm that water quality complies with safety standards, the Prohibition Notice will be lifted and updates will be provided in line with national protocols.
