As the excitement builds for the upcoming Rás Tailteann 2026, which will take place from May 20th to May 24th, 2026, Carlow County Council is using the prestigious event as a catalyst to champion cycling not just as a professional sport, but as a lifelong skill and a sustainable mobility option for all residents.

The County is leveraging the event to highlight that Carlow is a place for everyone to cycle from the elite athletes competing in the Rás to the student cycling to school or the family enjoying a weekend ride on our expanding greenway network.

Speaking on the connection between the elite race and local participation, Cllr. Ken Murnane, Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council, said:

"The Rás Tailteann is a spectacle of power and endurance, but its greatest legacy for Carlow will be the inspiration it provides to our local community. We are investing significantly in high-quality, safe cycling infrastructure across our towns and villages because we believe that the same roads used by international cyclists should also be safe and accessible for our own citizens. Whether you are commuting, cycling to school, or just out for the pure joy of it, we want Carlow to be the premier county for active travel."

The Council’s commitment is mirrored by the tireless work of the Active Carlow. Deborah Foley, Coordinator of Active Carlow as part of Carlow County Council, emphasized the transformative power of cycling for young people and community health:

"Cycling is freedom. It is one of the most accessible ways to improve both physical and mental health, and we are dedicated to ensuring that 'something for all stages' is a reality here in Carlow. Seeing the Rás pass through our county is a wonderful opportunity to show our young people that cycling is a viable, exciting, and inclusive activity. Our goal is to break down barriers so that every person, regardless of age or ability, feels confident getting on a bike. When we see the peloton arrive in May, we hope it sparks a movement of 'Active Carlow' that lasts long after the finish line."

The event organizers are equally enthusiastic about the legacy the race leaves behind. The Race Director of Rás Tailteann 2026 remarked:

"We are delighted to be in Carlow, but what really excites us is the Council's vision for the future. The Rás is about the passion for the sport, and to see a host county so deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of riders and the next generation of commuters is fantastic. We are not just here to race; we are here to support a culture where cycling is a central part of daily life. We hope this year’s stages serve as the perfect catalyst for the next generation of Irish cyclists to get out there and enjoy the open road."

As Carlow prepares to welcome the teams and the massive, vibrant atmosphere of the Rás, the message to the public is clear: there is a place for everyone on the saddle. Through ongoing investment in Active Travel schemes, including school-focused routes, segregated cycle paths, and town  connectivity, Carlow is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable mobility, ensuring the Joy of Cycling is accessible to every citizen.
