County Carlow is still under a Met Eireann Yellow Weather Warning for rain and wind until 23:00 hrs this evening, Carlow County Councils Severe Weather Assessment Team have convened and are managing the response to our functional area.  Carlow County Council will also join the NDFEM and Met Eireann technical briefing this afternoon.

Local Update:

While improved flood defence measures over the last 20 years in County Carlow have been implemented to safeguard properties at risk including the Carlow Flood Relief Scheme,  flood gates and wall height increases in Tullow and Tinnahinch Carlow County Council is providing sandbags to any properties at risk on a need basis.

Over 100 sandbags issued to at risk properties as a precautionary measure and Municipal District Staff have been deployed to assist individual properties at various locations across the County in addition to a number of roads incidents.

Pumps have been deployed in Carlow Town to known at risk areas in Pembrooke and The Mill Race and MD staff are monitoring these locations and at the ready should further steps be required including additional pumps and sandbags.

Flood gates are in place in Tullow and Tinnahinch.

Many roads have standing water and, in some cases, have been flooded across the width of the road.  We would ask motorists never to drive into standing water and flooded roads.  Our Roads Teams are dealing with a number of incidents across the county and ask road users not to pass road closed and road flooded signs.  A number of motorists have had to be rescued from their vehicles this morning.

  • The Leighlin Road L-3920 is currently flooded and impassable at Lanigan’s Lock (Crossneen Road), while in County Laois, we are working to safe guard this road with our colleagues and ask the public not to pass or remove the road closed signage.
  • Carlow Town Park closed from this evening.
  • Skrannahane, Ballinkillen road closed due to flooding.
  • Carpark in Tinnahinch closed due to flooding.
  • Ballinrush Road near Myshall closed due to damage caused by flowing water.
  • The N81 Road Closed in Rathvilly due to flood waters from the Slaney.  Staff are on site monitoring the location.

We ask road users to slow down, allow plenty of time for your journey and do not drive into flood waters under any circumstances.

All our road crews are deployed dealing with issues across the County.

If you need, help please do not hesitate to call.  Provide your name, number, the issue and your Eircode and crews will be deployed on a priority basis.
