On Tuesday, 7 October 2025, Carlow will host a unique event designed to empower local organisations, businesses, and community groups to engage more effectively with Europe. The workshop, titled “EU: A Catalyst for Change – Designing EU Projects & International Collaboration”, will take place at the Woodford Dolmen Hotel from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm.

Speaking about the event , Cllr. Ken Murnane , Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council explained, “Europe offers enormous opportunities for regions like Carlow. This workshop is about empowering local organisations to tap into that opportunity — to bring projects, partnerships, and investment home. With Communicating Europe funding, we can help turn ideas into action.”

The workshop will focus on building the capacity of local authorities, SMEs, enterprise centres, and community organisations to identify, design, and deliver successful EU-funded projects. Attendees will gain practical insights into how to navigate European programmes such as Horizon Europe, Interreg, and Erasmus+, while also hearing first-hand experiences from international experts who have delivered innovative cross-border initiatives.

Speakers will include Kieran Comerford, Head of Economic Development & Enterprise at Carlow County Council, who will set the context for why EU engagement is vital for regional growth. Brian Ogilvie from South East Technological University will discuss the importance of building lasting international partnerships, while Chiara dall’Aglio of Sviluppumbria, Italy’s regional development agency for Umbria, will share lessons from successful EU collaborations abroad. The programme also features Paul Radcliffe from Liverpool Enterprise Agency who will highlight how international trade can be fostered through EU initiatives, and Dr. Sergio Botelho, also of SETU, who will provide practical advice on preparing compelling EU project proposals.

Beyond the presentations, the workshop is designed to be interactive, giving participants the opportunity to ask questions, explore collaboration ideas, and connect with peers from across different sectors. Networking is central to the event, ensuring that attendees leave not only with knowledge but also with new contacts and the seeds of future partnerships.

Speaking about the event , Kieran Comerford , Head of Economic Development & Enterprise with Carlow County Council said “This event has been made possible thanks to Communicating Europe funding, which is specifically aimed at helping Irish citizens better understand the European Union and the opportunities it provides. The support reflects a clear objective: to bring Europe closer to local communities, highlighting the benefits of EU membership in tangible ways. By supporting workshops like this, Communicating Europe ensures that regions like Carlow are equipped to access funding, drive innovation, and strengthen international connections”.

The workshop is free to attend and open to all organisations interested in exploring European project opportunities, but advance registration is encouraged as places are limited.
