Local Authorities have wide ranging powers and responsibilities to stop and prevent water pollution, including:
- Licensing of discharges to surface waters from industrial, commercial and domestic activities.
- Pollution investigations.
- Farm inspections.
- Domestic wastewater treatment systems (septic tanks and other treatment systems).
- Monitoring water quality.
